Culm Valley

Welcome to Culm Valley u3a.

We are part of a UK-wide movement of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. Members explore new ideas, skills and activities together.

All u3a members draw upon their knowledge and experience to teach and learn from one another just for the pleasure of learning.

It's all voluntary; a typical u3a will be home to many interest groups covering a wide variety of different subjects - from art to walking and everything in between.

On the first THURSDAY afternoon of each month, except January, we hold our Members Monthly Meeting at Willand Village Hall. Members start arriving from 13:15 onwards to find somewhere to sit, get a cup of something hot, check the Interest Group tables and socialise with other members. At these meetings we usually have a guest speaker after which members are updated with news of the latest developments in Culm Valley u3a.

Next Monthly Meeting

Date: Thursday 5 November 2026

Speaker: Jim Causley

Title: Sabine Baring-Gould and the Traditional Songs of Devon

You probably haven't heard of Sabine Baring-Gould, I certainly hadn't until our next speaker, the award-winning folk singer and musician Jim Causley brought him to my attention.  It turns out that Victorian rector Baring-Gould was a prolific author and the composer of Onward Christian Soldiers.  And a Devonian to boot!
Jim Causley is a six times BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee and also a proud Devonian.  He has dedicated much of his career to researching and reviving the forgotten gems of his native county.  At our November meeting Jim will give us a presentation jam-packed with Devonshire delights, from dialect pieces, the Music Hall period to modern songs from Devon's thriving folk scene.

As well as our visiting speaker we are inviting all who attend this meeting to Wear It Pink in support of the Breast Cancer Now annual awareness campaign.
